Students, staff evacuated from summer camp near Augusta

Flooding on the Dearborn River forced the evacuation of the Montana Wilderness School of the Bible Kid’s Camp near Augusta.

The school is located on Dearborn Canyon Road, which has been washed out in several areas, preventing them from leaving.

Lewis and Clark County officials partnered with the Montana Air National Guard and the Air Force to fly out  100 students and 37 staff members from the school, along with some contractors who were trapped in the Diamond Bar X area.

Two CH-47 Chinook helicopters start the evacuation at 10 a.m. The students were flown to Holman Aviation at Great Falls International Airport, where their family members were scheduled to meet them.

Members of the Sheriff’s office and search and rescue personnel were to be flown in with ATVs to check the area.
