HAMILTON (AP) — A pain doctor who was convicted in the overdose deaths of two patients has been released from jail after the Montana Supreme Court granted him additional time to appeal his case to the proper venue.
Chris Christensen, 69, was ordered to be released Monday after he was jailed last month when his attorney missed the appeal deadline by filing it with the District Court in Hamilton rather than with the state Supreme Court.
The state Supreme Court had granted Attorney Josh Van de Wetering’s request for an “out-of-time appeal” for Christensen.
Christensen was convicted of two counts of negligent homicide and 20 other felonies.
Prosecutors say he prescribed pain medication and other drugs in dangerous combinations to patients at his clinic in Florence.
