Officials investigating after grizzly bear killed north of Libby

State and federal wildlife officials are investigating the shooting death of a grizzly bear.

The male bear was found dead on a forest road north of Libby in the Kootenai National Forest. Investigators believe the animal was killed on the evening of May 20.

Grizzly bears in northwestern Montana are protected as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the Barron/Bristow Creek area to call the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 329-3000 or the state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks at 1-800-TIP-MONT

A reward of up to $2,000 is being offered for any information leading to a conviction.
