Montana will remain 406 and 406 only until at least 2031.

It will be until at least 2031 that Montana will need another area code.

The state Public Service Commission said yesterday that the FCC reported that the area code would be sufficient for all phone numbers in the state until then.

Four years ago, the state began requiring carriers to give out numbers that aren’t in use. That helped extend the life of the single-area code, which was previously expected to expire in 2019.
