Fire investigators are looking into what caused a blaze in a Helena apartment building.
Fire crews were first called to the scene on East Lyndale Avenue just before 2 a.m. yesterday morning. Battalion Chief Fred Pippin said the fire was difficult to extinguish because of how large it was by the time crews arrived, moving into the attic space, and because of limited initial responders to both extinguish the fire and conduct an interior victim search.
Several fire departments responded to the mutual aid request, with West Valley, Lewis & Clark County and Montana City all joining the Helena Fire Department in battling the blaze.
Officials say everyone in the building was able to get out safely but two pets lost their lives in the fire, which was extinguished by 7 a.m.
Thirteen people were displaced by the fire which investigators say completely destroyed the building. The cause is still under investigation
