The long process of moving the Lewis and Clark County Detention Center is nearing its next phase.
With the current jail overcrowded and outdated, voters approved last fall a levy that paved the way for upgrades and renovations. In order to move forward, though, the Helena Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office needed to find a new home, as all space in the Law Enforcement Center will be converted and used to hold more inmates.
Now, the county is days away from finalizing a deal to purchase the old Blue Cross Blue Shield building in downtown Helena. And, according to county commissioner Susan Good-Giese, the physical move into that building may begin inside a month.
