Christmas tree lighting set for today in DC

The U.S. Capitol will get into the Christmas spirit this evening.

The Capitol Christmas tree-lighting ceremony is set for 3 p.m. MST, is open to the public and will be streamed live online. Helping to light the tree will be 11-year-old Bozeman resident Ridley Brandmayr, who lost the fingers of his right hand in an accident this summer. The seventh-grader was chosen by Sen. Jon Tester, who had the honor because the tree was from his state and he is the senior senator.

The 79-foot, nearly 14,000-pound Engelmann spruce was placed on the West Front Lawn after arriving from Montana last Monday.

Lighting the Capitol Christmas tree on the West Front Law has been a tradition since 1964.
