Berkeley Pit water treatment could begin this year

Toxic water sitting in the Berkeley Pit could begin being treated years ahead of schedule.

State officials and the Atlantic Richfield Company expect to start treating the water either this year or in early 2019.

The water, which has been sitting in the Superfund site for nearly four decades, will be pumped out at a rate of about three-million gallons per day to a water treatment plant and then eventually to a tailing pond.

Plans originally called for the pumping to start in 2023.
